Charleston Defeats Scrappy Lavaca Lady Arrows 3-0

As the team was preparing to leave West Fork last week following a third victory of the week, I asked Charleston coach Ryan Rachuy about the non-conference game at Lavaca coming up on Monday. Coach Rachuy described Lavaca as “scrappy” and said that they had to prepare for a fight, because that’s what Lavaca would bring. Rachuy’s words proved to be prophetic as the Lady Tigers swept the Lady Golden Arrows at Lavaca on Monday night, but had their hands full with the scrappy Lady Golden Arrows. Charleston (8-1, 4-1) will return home on Thursday to resume its conference schedule with Mansfield.

Coach Rachuy was pleased with his team’s performance and had tremendous respect for the Lavaca effort. “Those girls (the Lavaca team) are good volleyball players. Great atmosphere here. Great people. It’s a good rivalry. There have been times when Charleston /Lavaca, Charleston / Paris, Charleston / Mansfield, it gets chippy. But what I’ve found in volleyball is that there is a lot of respect for the girls on the teams, as long as the teams show that respect back, and we do. I am really proud of our girls of how they handled things. I think they handle things really well. They showed some character that goes back to their parents. I’ve got good parents; very proud of the parents that I have. I’m really blessed to be able to coach at Charleston. Especially when you are able to come into an area like this and play tough volleyball. They (Lavaca) have some injuries and I know they have some players who were not able to play tonight. I know their libero has some wrist issues; they’re hurting all over. But they played their rears ends off.”

Charleston now returns home for a Thursday night match with the Mansfield Lady Tigers. Mansfield, a program with multiple state championships in volleyball as part of their team’s history, promises to bring another highly-competitive match to Charleston. Mansfield is coached by perhaps its most prolific player in its program’s history, Kaylie Pyles. Pyles was the MVP of the 2013 Mansfield state championship tournament team. “We play a Mansfield team, they’ve got a couple of losses under them, but I tell you, after I have gotten to see a little bit of the last scores of their matches, they’re coming on. Coach Kaylie Pyles, we have a lot of respect for her. She’s a former player over there, won state titles over there. She knows what to demand from those girls, and I’ve got a lot of respect for that program. We’re going to have to get ourselves ready. We’re going to have to come out like we did tonight and really get after it and make sure we are doing what we have to do.”

Although Monday night’s victory at Lavaca was a non-conference match, it was a tough road victory over a very good volleyball team. The Charleston victory, in a tough atmosphere, could pay off down the line for the Lady Tigers. And they will need it. For now, it is the resumption of a tough remaining conference schedule for the Lady Tigers that begins Thursday night.

You won’t want to miss Thursday’s game. The gym will be full of Tigers from both schools.

Jr Tigers Exchange Blows With Golden Arrows

It was a close hard-fought battle between the Mansfield Jr High Tigers and the Lavaca Golden Arrows. The Tigers stayed hot on the Arrows trail but in the end, fell with a final score of 35-24 Lavaca. The Tigers are still working on trying to find their football footing but when that happens, chances are there’s going to be an earthquake.

#7 Logan Cravey

Freshman, Logan Cravey was first to put a touchdown on the board with a pass from Quarterback, Fisher Willsey. Cravey completed 3 receptions for a total of 75 yards in the game. Willsey finished with 10 passes for 166 yards. After the touchdown from Cravey, Drew Elmore added the extra 2 point conversion and the score was brought to 27-8 Lavaca.

The Tigers really came to life in the second half of the game. With 20 seconds left in the third quarter, Clint Stovall took a pass from Willsey and with a quarterback keeper for the two-point conversion, and the game upgraded to 35-16 Lavaca. In the fourth quarter with 2 minutes left, Tyler Turnipseed took the ball in for a Tiger touchdown and with Tyler Woolbrights two-point conversion, the game came to a 35-24 close.

#2 Raine Hecox

Mansfield ended with 280 total yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The future looks bright for the Jr High Tigers who will stay home for their next match-up against the Paris Eagles on September 19 at 7 p.m.

Sr Lady Bulldogs Give Lincoln Digs For Days

It doesn’t faze the Waldron Sr High Lady Bulldogs one bit if they play their matches at home or away. This well-polished volleyball team gets the job done with ease no matter where they’re chained down. Recently, the Lady Bulldogs took the win 3-0 in all three sets against the Lincoln Lady Wolves. Although Lincoln gave Waldron a run for their money, they took the lead 25-15, 25-17, and 25-13.

Helping to lock down the team total of 29 digs and 10 aces were Bayleigh Lipham, Kentucky Spence, Taylor Stacy, Karissa Johnston, Rheagan Sanford, Ashton Young, and Anastasia Lynch. Lipham led the team with 4 aces and Young led with 7 digs. Waldron now sits 4-1 in conference play and 5-4 in overall season play.

The Lady Bulldogs are more than ready for their next nonconference match when they will face the 5-0 Hackett Lady Hornets at home on September 16 starting at 4 p.m.

Sr Pirates Continue To Light Em’ Up

The Sr High Cedarville Pirates have done it again. After their massive 65-27 win over the Bigelow Panthers, the Pirates have started the season undefeated 3-0 which is something that hasn’t been achieved in over a decade. This accomplishment is largely due to the fact that the Pirates have solidarity that brings them together to make magic happen on the field.

With a total of 43 carries and 593 rushing yards, Cedarville is pushing the limits to make this season on for the books. The Pirates offense was ablaze with their lightning speed and spur-of-the-moment footwork. Kelin Mitchell earned 9 carries for 198 yards and one touchdown. Darryl Kattich snagged 13 carries for 161 yards and 3 touchdowns. And Hayden Partain netted 4 carries for 38 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cedarville’s defense can always be counted on to stand firm against any opponents offense. And when it came to holding the Panthers, that’s just what they did. The Pirate defense helped in establishing a 38 point lead while also keeping the wins column movin’ on up. Cedarville will rest up during their bye week and then be ready for road play against Lamar on September 27 at 7 p.m.

Sr Tigers Sink Their Teeth Into Golden Arrows

It was a huge win for the Sr High Mansfield Tigers over the Lavaca Golden Arrows in Friday nights football match-up. With a 53-22 blowout, the Tigers played cat and mouse with Lavaca all evening long. The Mansfield offense and defense showed up to this game with one objective and that was to take charge and ensure that the Arrows never got the opportunity to take flight. Mission accomplished.

#7 Tyler Holmes

Quarterback, Ethan Stovall, ended the game with eight complete passes for Mansfield totaling 206 yards. Receiving for the Tigers was Clay James with 2 receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown. Layton Howard with 2 receptions for 44 yards and one touchdown. Jaicy Griffin with 2 receptions for 32 yards and one touchdown. And with one reception each totaling 13 and 43 yards respectively was Tyler Holmes and Auston Carlton. Holmes also secured a Tiger touchdown.

#61 Zach Lowe

Helping to establish the Tigers 132 total rushing yards was Will Meadows, Isaac Cothran, Luke Ridenhour, Ethan Stovall, Zayne Dugan, Blayne Bryant, and Austin Carlton with Cothran, Ridenhour, and Carlton also bringing in one touchdown apiece. Randy Claude kicked the night away making 5/8 PAT and Layton Howard awed the crowd with his 79-yard kick-off return run for a touchdown.

The Mansfield Tigers will sit in a bye week but will be ready to roar on September 27 for their homecoming game against the West Fork Tigers. The game will start at 7 p.m.

Sr Lady Hornets Say “Talk To The Hand” At Slamfest

Pictured is #9 Shayla Foster and #5 Kayla Richardson

Over the weekend on Saturday, September 14, the Sr High Lady Hornets took to Harrison, Ar to show off their winning volleyball skills in the annual Slamfest Tournament. The Lady Hornets walked in with an overall record of 8-2-1 but by the end of the day, that record had upgraded to 11-2-1. Hackett was scheduled to take on Yellville-Summit, Mansfield, and Piggott and in all three matches, the Lady Hornets took the win 2-0.

#10 Madeline Freeman

With scores of 25-4 and 25-10 against Yellville-Summit, the Lady Panthers didn’t even get the chance to warm up. Racking up a total of 16 kills, Kenadi Wright and Rain Vaughn led their team with 4 each while Madeline Freeman trailed with 3. Shayla Foster earned 6 of the Lady Hornets 15 aces. Jamye Durham brought in 3 blocks. And leading with a total of 7 and 4 digs respectively were Kayla Richardson and Kandace Byrd.

Hackett took to the net next against the Mansfield Lady Tigers. Earning wins of 25-9 and 25-11, the Lady Hornets were no strangers to the powerhouse game that the Lady Tigers would bring to the table. Freeman ended the sets with a total of 5 aces and 3 kills. Richardson dug deep to find her over the top volleyball skills earning 10 digs. Byrd pulled in 4 aces and 5 digs. Vaughn achieved 7 up close and personal kills. And Foster shoveled in 4 digs.

#9 Shayla Foster

In the final face-off of the day against the Piggott Lady Mohawks, the Lady Hornets had to reach deep down to find every little piece of defensive and offensive skills that they possessed to grab their last two set wins. Although nerve-wracking, Hackett came through and sealed the deal with wins of 25-23 and 25-20. Brooke Holt and Kadence Glass brought in 2 aces apiece of the total 8 aces obtained. 22 kills were earned with Freeman securing 7 of those. Richardson led with 15 digs. And Kenadi Wright brought in 2 blocks.

The Lady Hornets get no time to rest as they will shoot for more net results when they travel to Waldron on September 16 to face the always well-coached tough-as-nails Lady Bulldogs who are sitting 4-1 in conference play. The game will have a start time of 4 p.m.

Jr Pirates 3-0 After “Big” Victory Over Bigelow

There’s nothing junior about the Cedarville Jr High Pirates. They have started off the season with an undefeated 3-0 record in dominant fashion with the latest victims of the Pirates plunder being the Bigelow Panthers. Cedarville sailed over the Panthers with a 36-6 win in last Thursday nights football battle.

As with any football game, a team has to work as one unit and the Cedarville Jr Pirates did just that. The Pirate defense opened fire with all cannons shutting down the Bigelow offense down in the backfield on almost every snap. Cedarville defensively took no prisoners throughout the night. Although defense wins championships, it was the Pirate offense that took showcasing to a whole new level.

Led by Hayden Morton, the Cedarville offense excelled in the ground and pound game. Morton chewed up 234 yards against the Panthers and racked up 4 touchdowns. Of course, those yards wouldn’t be as achievable without the BEEF leading the way. The Cedarville offensive line plowed through Bigelow’s defense with ease opening holes big enough for a Mac Truck to drive through.

The Cedarville Jr High Pirates are undefeated in their season. Bottom line. They have been dominate in their three victories and look to continue sailing smooth seas as they host the Booneville Bearcats on Thursday, September 19th in what is expected to be a slobber knocker of a game.

Charleston Travels to Ozark After Open Date

It has been ten days since Charleston played at Dardanelle. That night, the injuries were mounting, and when the game was over, the Tigers were left to look forward to an open date in the schedule to get their players back. The good news is that Charleston will get some of their players back this week when they travel to Ozark to play the Hillbillies. The not-so-good news is that the Tigers will still not be at full strength. Not all of Charleston’s players will be back in time for the game at Ozark. The goal continues to be to have these players back in time for the conference opener against Greenland when the Tigers play their first home game on September 27.

Charleston coach Ricky May is encouraged by the improving health of his team. “You hate to see anyone get hurt. They (the players) are getting to play their dream, and for them to get hurt is awful.” Coach May indicated that some of the Charleston players will be back this week, and a few more may be ready depending on their progress this week.

Ozark entered last week ranked fourth in Arkansas in 4A by Max Preps. After a close 15-12 loss to Clarksville, the Hillbillies have dropped to fifth. Nevertheless, Ozark will be ready to avenge last week’s loss before they too enter conference play on September 27 at Mena.

“Ozark is big up front. They have three guys over 300 lbs. Their running back, Woolsey (Daniel Woolsey) is phenomenal. He’s a really good running back. Their quarterback, Faulkenberry (Harper Faulkenberry), he’s a really good runner. And of course, they have Bryant Burns.”

Ozark will be led by its all-everything tight end, Bryant Burns. Burns is listed by Max Preps as the top returning tight end in Arkansas and was named to their Preseason All-State Football Team. At 6-3, 228 lbs., Burns is a formidable target. Last season, Burns caught 27 passes for 637 yards and seven touchdowns. Burns has verbally committed to Army for next year.

In two games this season, the Ozark offense has completed 11 of 20 pass attempts for 169 yards. They average 15.4 yards per completion. Per game, the Hillbillies average 84.5 yards passing. They have passed for two touchdowns, and their longest completion was 42 yards. Rushing, Ozark has ran for 465 yards in two games. They average 5.2 yards per carry, and 232.2 yards per game. Their longest run from scrimmage has been 36 yards. They have rushed for four touchdowns.

Ozark has had 11 receptions for 169 receiving yards. They average 15.4 yards per catch. They have two receiving touchdowns. Total offense for this season, the Hillbillies have 634 yards, or 355.5 yards per game.

On defense, Ozark has 96 solo tackles per game, and 140 total tackles. Six of those have been for lost yardage. They have produced 9 sack yards lost and have had two sacks for the season. Ozark has one interception and it was returned for one yard. The defense has been opportunistic in producing four fumble recoveries for 36 yards. The Ozark defense forced two fumbles in their first two games.

On special teams, the Hillbillies kicked off eight times for 325 yards. Their longest kickoff was 56 yards. They returned three punts for 25 yards. The longest return was 13 yards. They are 2 / 4 in point after touchdown attempts.

After the loss to Dardanelle, it was unseen as to how the Tigers would react going into the open date on the schedule. “I was afraid the week off after a loss would be a bad thing. But I really think it was a good thing, physically, and for the mental side, too. We got to get back and do some basic things. Got to not hit so much, try to recover a little bit. So, from that stand point, I think it was good for us. Obviously, it would have been better for us if we had won that Dardanelle game and have that week to have that going in, but at the same time, I believe the kids have bought in to, we want to win every game, but at the same time we realize that there are three seasons, and that conference is about to start and we want to be as healthy as we can going into that.”

Charleston’s non-conference schedule this year has been as tough as anyone’s. It doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers as they go to Ozark to face one of the top five 4A schools on the road. I expect Charleston to play hard and with pride. The Tigers need your support Friday night.

Jr Lady Tigers Are No One Hit Wonders

When it comes to taking down the competition, two outta three ain’t bad. The Mansfield Lady Tigers had a busy week as they first took down the Hackett Lady Hornets with a 2-0 victory of 25-20 and 25-15. The Lady Tigers brought in 7 aces as a team with Skylynn Harris leading with 4. The entire team put in major work in the digs department with every player contributing equally. Not killing it softly was Harris leading with 5 kills followed by Brooklyn Adams with 4. And at the front of the Lady Tiger pack with 9 assists was Natalie Allison with 9.

Brooklyn Adams

The next night, Mansfield hosted the Elkins Lady Elks. Again, the Lady Tigers showed their stealth-like volleyball skills on the court and stole the show with a 2-0 dominance of 25-9 and 25-11. As a team, the Lady Tigers secured 9 total aces with Harris slamming out 4 followed by Alayna Turner with 3. Adams led the team with 5 of the 10 team digs. And Mansfield killed it as a team with 18 total kills with Harris and Adams securing 5 each and Turner bringing in 4.

Kynslee Ward

On Thursday night, the Lady Tigers faced the Lady Eagles at Paris and although they fought a good fight, the Lady Tigers fell 2-0 with a close call of 16-25 and 26-28. Mansfield owned a whopping 40 digs as a team with Allison leading with 10 of those, Adams following with 9 and Harris trailing with 8. Harris and Allison combined for 10 of the Lady Tigers 17 kills. And Madelen Jones rounded out the stats with 9 assists.

Up next for the Jr High Lady Tigers will be on the road against the Lady Tigers of West Fork on September 17 starting at 4:30 p.m.
