Arrows open conference play with a crushing victory!
Golden Arrows opened conference play last night against The JC Westside Rebel’s. For the second straight week, Lavaca’s defense pitched a shut out winning 45-0. Coach Schlinker said that “things are coming together, they are really starting to get it”.

The Arrows dominated from the opening drive with strong running by Tyler Armstead. Tyler ran the ball hard all night. Jimmy Hall added to the offense by going 4 of 5 throwing the ball to include a big 40 yard touchdown pass to Mason Walter.
Defense was stellar all night. Alex Dugan had a couple of big sacks followed with Mason Walter and Daniel Hartsfield had a couple of pics. Hartsfield ran his back for 6. Kaw-liga Brewer along with Jake Noble played big all night as well.

One of the most impressive things I noticed is that even after the starters came off the field, our second defense was able to keep the Rebel’s at bay. This was a complete team win and these Arrows are getting better with each outing.
Next up for the Arrows is Mountainburg at home next Friday at 7:00. Come out and support your arrows. This game is the “ #noonefightsalone” game. There will be a BBQ tailgate benefit for the Vann family. Bailey Vann is the Lavaca senior who is still battling cancer. Please come and support. This family.

Mansfield Mayor Looks to Make Departmental Improvements
By Tammy Moore Teague
The Mansfield City Council met in regular session on Thursday night. Present were Aldermen Georganna Mabry, Dave Johnson, Jan Carlton, Beverly Lyons, Rick McDaniel and Sheri Hopkins. Also present were Mayor Mike Gipson and Stephanie Morgan. Fire Chief Stephen Haysmer and Police Chief Boyd Farmer were both absent.
After the minutes and financial reports were accepted, Gipson advised the council of multiple residential break-ins –see related story. He stated “I do have a problem right now. I hate to bring this up when they are not here to answer. We have six police and there was no one on call last night until 10 o’clock. I called Eric (Carlton) at 9, well it was before 9, and he said he would be there as soon as possible. He was supposed to be there from 10 to 10 today. There was no one on call. They had to call Fort Smith or Greenwood. So, we’re having a lot of this. We’re having a lot of break-ins. I took an oath to do my best for this town, it’s my fault that I allowed this to happen. So, we are gonna start working on this as soon as possible. I didn’t even know who was on duty and I have to know who is on duty, I am the mayor, that’s my job.” –See 4:00 mark in live coverage of the meeting.
Alderman Lyons responded by recommending that the council consider the expense, “what we have, how many we have and do we need as many as we have.” Carlton inquired of the number of full-time vs. part-time officers, Gipson responded the city has 2 part-time the rest are full-time. Lyons went on to add “when the chief is gone, he leaves someone in charge and that person is failing to do what they were supposed to do.” Gipson admitted he has been “hit pretty hard by not knowing who is on duty, and that it’s not going to happen again.”
The council discussed an application by Matthew Nichols to be added to the Volunteer Fire Department. Nichols holds a training certificate that will allow volunteers to be trained in house. Nichols was voted unanimously to join the department. Gipson reported that only one person from the fire department participated in the PPE (personal protective equipment) training last weekend. However, he was unable to attend the full class.
In other business, Gipson showed the council his idea on improving a flood prone area surrounding a raw sewage tank at the water treatment plant. He plans to move fill dirt in and build up the area to prevent water from reaching it. Gipson went on to add that the walking trail is complete and that he is getting a lot of compliments and positive feedback on the project.
Additionally, the council voted to give Tony Gregory, the city’s class II waste water operator, a raise. He will now make $15/hr. Lastly, Hopkins made the motion to change the day the city observes Halloween from Wednesday night, to Tuesday night. That motion carried on a 5-1 vote, with Carlton voting against.
Lady Arrows Continue to Dominate

Lavaca Lady Arrows continue to dominate at the net.
The Ladies of Lavaca took on the Leopards from Alpena yesterday in a big conference match. Alpena came into the match with a 6-2 conference record. One match win behind the Arrows who are 7-1 and one match behind Hackett.
The result was the Arrows winning in straight sets to keep pace with Hackett and create some separation from the rest of the conference. With only 3 conference games left before the tournament, it’s looking like the up coming Hackett game will determine who gets the number one seed.

Lavaca is getting stronger with each outing. Coach Headley is very proud of this team, as he should be. He had this to say after last nights game, “I thought it was one of the most complete and clean matches that we have played all year. It was a total team effort and we were able to utilize every player we have. We passed the ball very well and got the ball to our setters. Abby (Glidewell) really set the ball well, and that gave our hitters a lot of great opportunities at a bunch of kills.”
Up next for the Lady Arrows is Alma in a non conference game on Monday night.

NO Bomb Found After Threat at Mansfield Elementary
Information was passed onto Mansfield School District administration of what they believed to be discussion of a bomb being at Mansfield Elementary School.
Following protocol, multiple emergency services were called to the location where no threat was found.
“For the safety of our kids and faculty, we always check each building thoroughly” stated Mansfield Superintendent, Robin Ross.
International Runners Add Variety to Tigers
Mansfield has a unique blend of international runners mixing well with their home grown Arkansas talent. From Germany, Sweden, and Ukraine are three likable athletes that have added flavor to the red borscht that is Mansfield cross country.
Borscht, a traditional Ukrainian soup that can be made of beets, pork, and assorted vegetables, seems oddly appropriate given the new melting pot of players now running for Mansfield.
Artem Zirka of Kyiv, Ukraine, Anina Reutter of Stuttgart, Germany, and Josefin Lofving of Gothenburg, Sweden sweeten the pot know as Mansfield cross country.
Zirka lets it be known, he prefers his family’s home cooking. His go to meal is that unique sounding bowl of borscht or a cup of porridge.
After a particular high mileage day of cross country running, Zirka like most runners builds an appetite. Unfortunately for him, a Big-Mac and fries are among the limited menu selections at most Mansfield racing stops. Borscht bowls are few and far between.
Nonetheless, Zirka and his two international teammates make do with the meals as well as the rest of American culture. With Reutter and Lofving, the international trio run for Mansfield’s long distance team this season.
“I like American schools very well,” said Zirka after a recent 5K race in Acorn. “Everyone is smiling. You can say hello and people are so friendly. After school sports, really everything about the school, is nice except maybe the lunches.”
Zirka runs for the senior men’s team. Reutter and Lofving participate with the senior women’s squad.
“There are no sports in school where I come from,” said Reutter. “We have like PE. You can play some sports after school. I play tennis and like to swim.”
Lofving has a similar story to share as she explains the lack of school sports in her native Sweden.
“We don’t have sports in school,” confirmed Lofving. “But, I like horses. I ride horses. English horse riding and gate jumping is what I do. I also snow ski.”
For now, the three new students have found cross country to be an interesting addition to their school schedule and American life.
“It was the third day of school and these three heard the announcement about joining cross country,” explained John Mackey, Mansfield’s head coach. “They came together and said they wanted to join. It has been a good fit so far. I’ve enjoyed seeing them progress and becoming a valuable part of our team.”
Despite their varied backgrounds, the three have become instant friends. Likewise, they have become quite close to their new American teammates.
“Josefin told me that she and Anina met in New York before they knew they were coming to Mansfield,” stated Mackey. “After they got here, all three students ended up being neighbors on the same street in Mansfield. Fate formed their friendship.
Each of the exchange students have their own interests with Anina favoring tennis, Josefin preferring English horse riding, and Artem enjoying soccer. They also have some commonalities. Most of which include a proficiency in multiple languages.
Anina’s mother is from Norway. Her father is from Germany. Consequently, she is fluent in Norwegian and German speech as well as English.
Josefin speaks Swedish and English. She has some knowledge of Norwegian as her home country of Sweden borders Norway.
Artem is comfortable with Ukrainian, Russian, and English languages. He is also learning Czech. According to the Ukrainian citizen, he can go to Czech Republic University for free if he speaks Czech.
For their likes and differences, the international students fit easily into the routine of Mansfield athletics. Friends on both sides “of the pond” have come into their lives since landing in this country.
“It is our good fortune to have such well-adjusted, intelligent, and athletic kids join our school,” expressed Mackey. “We may not serve borscht, but we can certainly throw together some deer chili. These are good kids from which our home grown players can learn. I think the reverse of that is also true.”
Junior Arrows vs Westside
Pictures courtesy of Amanda Hall
Tough night for Junior Arrows
Both the 7th grade and the Junior high Arrows lost to JC Westside last night. However, both teams played well and showed a lot of guts. The 7th grade Arrows played a Rebel team that played both 7th and 8th graders because they didn’t have enough players from 7th grade. The Arrows gave up a lot of size in the game. Jimmy Barron (40) had a huge game. He had several strong carries and scored Lavaca’s only Touchdown. He also was strong on defense with several tackles and 2 interceptions.
The Junior Arrows got off to a slow start but Spencer Giles (20. and Cazen Winters (3) were able to get things moving late in the first quarter. Giles had two big runs and scored with just under 24 seconds left to bring the score to 6-8. This game was a back and forth slug fest from that point on..
Rebel’s scored on 45 yard pass and catch. Conversion no good 6-14. But then Mattocks Noel (1) had an interception and 20 yard return followed by a 40 yard TD run by Cazen Winters bring score to 12-14.

The second half started with a 48 yard run by Cazen Winters to set up 1st and goal, unfortunately, Lavaca fumbled the ball in backfield. The Rebels were able to capitalize after 60 yard TD run Rebel’s. Conversion no good. Lavaca trails 12-20.
The Arrows would not give up though. Cazen Winters (3) hit Jackson Floyd (8) for 85 yard TD pass conversion no good cutting the score to 18-20. Late in the 3rd quarter, hard running by Cazen Winters (3) set up a go ahead touchdown and the Arrows finally captured the lead. 26-20.

Westside scored twice in the 4th quarter to put the game away. But these Junior Arrows played a gutsy, and physical game. Showed a lot of heart and have no reason to hang their heads.

Mansfield PD Investigating Multiple Break-Ins
By Tammy Moore Teague
Five break-ins have occurred over the past few months within the City of Mansfield. Details of these crimes, however, have not been released as the police department continues their open investigation.
The former Martin Funeral Home, located on Grove Street, is the most recent in the string of burglaries. Concerned citizen and neighbor to the residence, Evelyn Bise stated this incident brought back emotions of when her own home was broken into years ago in California. “It hurt my heart for this family, and it brought back those emotions of feeling violated that someone went through your personal belongings.” Bise added, “Now this isn’t just a house, it is a historic home in this town as many of the houses up here on the hill are. ‘The Martin House’ was converted 27 plus years ago to a family home. Still housing many of the treasures of years gone by, it has been broken into by vandals. Rummaging through personal belongings is a true violation of privacy and it shows no sense of respect to others. This is alarming to many of us. However, precautions are being taken to attempt to prevent some of this lack of respect and dishonesty. I have lived beside this house for 18 years and have marveled at its beauty and history. Am I alarmed by the break-in? YES! Then on Friday night as I browse Facebook I see yet another family in town the victim of a break-in where the family dog was allowed to escape. I don’t have the details of that, but my sympathy goes out to that family as well.”

That break-in occurred in the center of town, about three blocks from the police department, in the daytime. The would-be burglar was scared off by the family’s dog. “They didn’t take anything,” said homeowner Ronnie Bell. Bell and his wife have lived there nine years, and this has left them shaken. Loosing their dog, Kozzie, has been difficult as well. “Our 14 year old dog, Kozzie, protected our home, and stopped the thief from taking a single item, but we’d rather have Kozzie than anything in the house. The intruder left our two gates open and our dog is now missing. He cannot hear unless there is a really loud sound near him. We are praying for his safe return home soon!”

Two homes near the old Dixie Theater and one near Tiger Trail Road have also been broken into. It remains unclear if this series of home invasions are connected. Business owners and homeowners are asked to be vigilant. Bise advised, “we as a community need to stay alert to our surroundings, report suspicious activities and pray our law enforcement officers are diligent in their investigation and can identify and prosecute those responsible.”
Two Ingredient Apple Pie Cinnamon Bites
By: Kimberly Boyd
Are you looking for a quick taste of heavenly goodness? This two ingredient Apple Pie Cinnamon Bites could become your fastest sweet tooth go-to recipe! I am a firm believer in “less mess” equals “less stress!” With this two ingredient, Apple Pie Cinnamon Bites, you will agree with that motto for sure! I stumbled upon these, and I recently made them for a snack at our bible study at church. They were an instant hit and it looked like I had spent hours in the kitchen like a “Betty Crocker” know it all. This recipe is so easy and is the best when you need a fast desert to make for get togethers. All you need is 2 cans of cinnamon rolls and a can of apple pie filling! Simple as that!
I suggest lining your cupcake pan with cupcake wrappers for easy clean up. Spray inside your wrappers with non-stick cooking spray. Place one cinnamon roll into a cupcake wrapper and make into a pie-like shaped shell. Then, scoop up approximately a teaspoon of apple pie filling and place inside the cinnamon bowl you just made. Continue on until all cinnamon rolls are shell shaped and apple pie filled. Now, you are ready for the oven! Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes or until edges look brown. Remove from oven. Then, while they are hot, drizzle with the icing that came with the cinnamon rolls.
This ooey gooey goodness is yummy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side!
I also added a little cinnamon and sugar to my apple pie filling before I scooped it into the cinnamon roll shell. I love lots of cinnamon and sugar. However, it isn’t required and will still taste delicious either way!
Happy Baking!!
If you decide to bake these, we would love to see your picture! Comment below with your picture of your Apple Pie Cinnamon Bites!

Arrows Ready For Rebel’s

Arrows Ready For JC Westside.
Lavaca is coming off of a big win against 3A Two Rivers in a game where everything was clicking. Lavaca plays a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for conference play. After 3 games Lavaca is only 1-2 but that really doesn’t tell the story. Injuries, and getting accustomed to new assignments were the story of the first two games of the season, but the Arrows ended their non-conference schedule by annihilating the Gators on their field. This game the offense moved the ball at will and the defense flew all over the field with bone crushing hits frustrating the Gators all night.
Lavaca has a very strong defense which is led by Trevon (T-man ) Moore. T-man leads the conference in tackles with 30, 4 of those being tackles for loss. Also, Lavaca has 3 of the top 4 Sack leaders in conference, Jake Noble has 3, Tyler Armistead has 2, and Tucker Marshall also has 2.
Offensively, Tyler Armistead is number 3 in conference in rushing yards with 255 yards averaging 6.9 yards per carry. As a team the Arrows are averaging 6.4 yards per carry. With the return of quarterback Jimmy Hall Lavaca becomes a well rounded and balanced attack.
I caught up with Coach Schlinker this week and he had this to say about this weeks game, “Our guys are looking good. Been a hot week and we have battled through it. Our effort has been good. I think our guys are ready to prove themselves as conference play starts.” I asked him what strengths Westside brings and how can we combat them. “Well, they are huge up front. We have to play with great pad level. Also, they do a good job of working different motions to try to get you out of position. We have to play ‘assignment football’ on both sides of the ball.”
Arrows take on the Rebel’s at 7:00 in Coal Hill. Come out and support your Golden Arrow football team.
